Maritime zone prescribed by the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) over which a state exercises sovereignty, although foreign ships (civilian) are allowed innocent passage through it or transit passage for straits. Territorial sea covers 12 nautical miles from the baseline of a coastal state, and sovereignty extends to the airspace above and to the seabed below the territorial sea.
