Blackfin tuna (Thunnus atlanticus)
Tropical species whose geographical distribution is limited to the western central Atlantic Ocean, from Martha’s Vineyard in Massachusetts to 26°S in Brazil and the island of Trinidad and Tobago, including Bermuda, the wider Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico (Collette and Graves, 2019). Recent studies have described an expansion of the distribution and fishing grounds of blackfin tuna in the southwestern Atlantic that may be due to increasing water temperatures, suggesting that the species distribution may have been displaced southward until 34°S (Cardoso et al., 2021).
